These photographs were taken in Northern Laos about an hours car ride from Luang Prabang. The two photographed villages are home to the Hmong and Khmu people of Laos. Historically, these ethnic minorities have been oppressed and escaped persecution by fleeing to higher altitudes. Luang Prabang and the surrounding area is a hyper center for 'ethical tourism'. Today many Hmong and Khmu people living in rural villages continue to experience high rates of poverty. Despite many of its negative repercussions, tourism offers a viable means for economic mobility for many living within these communities. That being said tourism is not a sustainable solution and economic growth needs to circulate locally for the community to succeed independently.
